Short answer
To make a product demo video, pick one audience and one job, choose the two or three workflows that matter most, script them as problem, setup, key steps, outcome and call to action (about 150 words per minute), prepare clean screens with demo data, decide between a screen recording and an animated UI demo, then add voice-over and captions and test it on someone new to the product.
A product demo video shows how your product works: the key workflow on screen, step by step, with a voice-over explaining what is happening and why it matters. Done well, it answers the question a prospect asks right after "what is this?", which is "how would I actually use it?". Here is how to plan, script and produce one.
Demo videos influence decisions. In Wyzowl's 2026 survey, 80% of people said they have bought or downloaded an app after watching an app demo video (Wyzowl, 2026).
Step 1: Pick one audience and one job
Decide who the demo is for (a trial user, an evaluator in a sales cycle or an existing customer) and the one job they want to get done. A demo that tries to show every feature to every audience ends up showing nothing clearly.
Step 2: Choose the two or three moments that matter
List the workflows your best customers use most, then pick the two or three that deliver the clearest outcome. Those are your scenes. Everything else belongs in help docs or a longer onboarding series.
Step 3: Write the script
Use this structure for a 60 to 90-second demo:
| Part | What it covers | Share of the video |
|---|---|---|
| Problem | The task the viewer wants to get done, in their words | About 10% |
| Setup | Where they start in your product | About 10% |
| Key steps | Two or three steps that solve the task, one scene each | About 55% |
| Outcome | What they end up with and why it matters | About 15% |
| Call to action | Start a trial, book a call or open the feature | About 10% |
Keep to about 150 words per minute of video, based on typical conversational pace (National Center for Voice and Speech), and remember that on-screen action needs pauses. Our script guide has more on writing for the ear.
Step 4: Prepare clean screens
Collect high-resolution screenshots of every screen in the script with realistic but fictional demo data. Remove anything confidential, such as real customer names or emails. Note which buttons, fields and results should be highlighted in each scene.
Step 5: Recording or animation?
| Screen recording | Animated UI demo | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed to make | Fast | Slower, more planned |
| Clutter | Shows everything on screen | Only what matters, no logins or loading |
| Focus | Cursor and zoom | Highlights, callouts and simplified screens |
| Lifespan | Breaks with small UI changes | Holds up better when details change |
| Best for | Tutorials, help docs, internal training | Website, sales, launches and ads |
Step 6: Add voice-over, captions and music
Lock the voice-over before animation so scenes can be timed to it. An AI voice works well for most demos and makes script changes fast. Add captions: many viewers watch with the sound off, and captions also help accessibility.
Step 7: Review with fresh eyes, then publish in the right places
Show the draft to someone who has never used the product. If they cannot say what the product does and how, simplify. Then place the demo where evaluators look: the product or features page, sales follow-up emails, the free trial welcome flow and your help center.

Product demo video FAQs
How long should a product demo video be?
Most animated product demos are 60 to 120 seconds: long enough to show two or three key workflows, short enough to hold attention. Split longer tours into several short videos, one per feature or use case.
What should a product demo video script include?
Open with the problem the user wants to solve, show the two or three steps that solve it in your product, highlight the outcome, then end with one call to action. Around 150 words per minute of video is a useful budget, based on typical conversational speaking pace.
Should I use a screen recording or an animated demo?
Screen recordings are quick and good for tutorials and internal training. Animated demos redraw your interface without clutter, logins or loading screens, highlight exactly what matters and stay usable longer when small UI details change. Many teams use recordings for help docs and animation for marketing.
What is the difference between a product demo video and an explainer video?
An explainer focuses on why your product matters: the problem and your solution. A demo focuses on how it works: the features and workflow on screen. Read our full comparison of product demo videos vs explainer videos for when to use each.
How much does an animated product demo video cost?
At Clickcode Media, animated demo videos use the same fixed prices as explainers: $349 USD for 60 seconds, $499 USD for 90 seconds and $649 USD for 2 minutes, including script, AI voice-over, UI animation, music, 2 script revision rounds and 2 video revision rounds.
